Until Trucks Drive Themselves, It’s Autonomous Humans Who Need Managing

With self-driving vehicles looming somewhere on the horizon, it would be easy to assume that managing driver behavior is just a short-term responsibility – after all, the theory is when the robots take over, collisions will end, right?

For the foreseeable future, managing company drivers and ensuring that the driver behind the wheel is safe and subject to appropriate levels of monitoring remains an important aspect of a fleet manager’s role. Enter BlueArrow Telematics Accident Avoidance System.

The system, which is available today tracks drivers and reports into a Fleet Manager Dashboard; each driver gets detailed feedback and a Driver Performance Score, encouraging safer driving and creating friendly competition within the team.

BlueArrow Telematics’ Accident Avoidance System works by continuously monitoring the road ahead, lane markings and speed limit signs and analyzing for the risks of forward collisions, unintended lane departures, tailgating, and pedestrian and cyclist hazards. When the system detects the possibility of an imminent collision, it alerts the driver with a visual and audio alert - in real time, providing the critical seconds necessary to avoid or mitigate a collision. With the average cost of an accident involving a fatality at $1,130,000 , increased safe driving is critical.

North Carolina-based Baker Roofing Company was an early adopter of the Accident Avoidance System. Vice President Toby Boyles worked closely with BlueArrow CEO Stuart Lamm to develop and deploy the Driver Rewards initiative.

“We designed the program to reward both management and drivers,” Boyle explains. “We gave BlueArrow specific parameters we wanted to monitor – GPS data, speeding, harsh braking, seatbelt use, and maintenance – and the system scores these using a 1 to 5 scale.”

These indicators surrounding safety, maintenance, and overall driving performance are then embedded and accessible via BlueArrow’s telematics partner, Geotab ’s, award-winning fleet tracking platform. The MyGeotab platform integrates vehicle data assets and delivers critical business intelligence , compiling the information into a custom report that can be accessed at the click of a button.

“On a scale of 1 to 5, we saw lots of 3’s and 4’s the first month. Today, everyone’s score averages 4 to 4.5,” said Boyles. “All these technologies work together to assist us to meet our safety initiatives and produce positive results for the entire company.”

THE REWARDS? Since this program has been implemented, the healthy competition between drivers has led to increased employee satisfaction and sense of comradery. Not to mention the rewards for the drivers – gifts, time off, pats on the back, PLUS the driver with the best score gets to drive a brand-new truck!

For the company, there are many business benefits that spin out of this – reducing unsafe driver behaviors, fuel cost savings, improving vehicle maintenance and boosting productivity, BlueArrow is able to save Baker Roofing thousands annually per vehicle.
